The parish church of St Leonards, Sussex, destroyed by a flying bomb, in July 1944

The parish church of St Leonard's, Sussex, destroyed by a flying bomb, in July 1944, will rise again from stone hewn from the ground by 12 German prisoners of war who today began work in a quarry on the nearby Crowhurst Park Estate. Their work was preceded by a service conducted by Canon CC Griffith, rector of the blitzed church, who read a message from the Bishop of Chichester.
Photo shows: Canon CC Griffith (white sweater) gives instructions to the German POW before quarrying began at Crowhurst, Sussex. In the background of parishioners who came to witness the commencement of the work.
