For the first time (since pre-war days) a Kent strawberry field has been thrown open to the public to come and help themselves.
However, in the old days the fruit was free - but on K. Walton's Oak Tree Farm at Polhill, near Sevenoaks, the public were charged 1/1D per pound, plus the cost of the basket if required.
This is the first time it has been tried on his farm - and the response to an advertisement in the local paper was fantastic. The farmer was pleased with the result, since it means the plants are completely free of fruit for stronger growth. The variety - Talisman - and the crop has now been completely harvested.
