250, fireman fight great blaze in West End of London.
two hundred and fifty firemen fought a great blaze which destroyed the building of the Gramophone Company, manufacturers of His Masters Voice gramophone, radio and electrical domestic appliances in Oxford Street, London.
A watchman, Sgt William Glover, Travis, aged 48, was burnt to death as he tried to give the alarm. The flames were fed by thousands of gramophone records, and all traffic was diverted from Oxford Street, one of the busiest thoroughfares in the West End of London, while firemen used a huge canvas tank, designed for service in air raid precaution measures to provide extra pressure for the hoses.
Photo shows, a battery of hoses directed on the burning building.
