The famous London church.
The Doric pillars and gracefully tapering spires of St Martin in the Fields, are a familiar sight to every Londoner, and one of our more cherished ecclesiastical germs. It was built between 1721 and 1726 on the site of an earlier church, and became the focal point of nationwide interest between the two wars as the pulpit of one of Britains best loved preachers, the Rev H R L (Dick) Shepperd, whose sermons were regularly broadcast. Standing as it does in a dominant position in Trafalgar Square, the church attracts many visitors-not least among them the unfortunate downs, and outs who lodge overnight in bunks provided in the church crypt, where in wartime years a canteen provided rest and refreshment to countless British and allied Warriors passing through the capital.
