Work has begun on removing 80, 000 sandbags which protected precious monuments in
Work has begun on removing 80, 000 sandbags which protected precious monuments in the Westminster Abbey, London, and it is helped that within 12 months the Abbey will be restored to its former glory. Air raid damage is estimated at ?135, 000, but efficient precautions against enemy actions saved every feature of historic interest. The oldest stained glass was removed at the beginning of the war, and the rest has not been greatly damaged. Five of the Abbey houses were destroyed or seriously damaged; they included the Deans House; the Cloisters and Little Cloisters, and the building of Westminster School and the Choir School. Although the Abbey is expected to be restored by the summer of 1946, it will be much longer before the houses are rebuilt.
