Framed Print of Heavy rain was falling when the 34, 000 ton Cunard - White Star Liner Caronia largest
Heavy rain was falling when the 34, 000 ton Cunard - White Star Liner Caronia largest ship now building in the world, was launched at John Browns Clydebank shipyard today by Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth, who was accompanied by her fiance, Lt. Philip Mountbatten, R. N. They were afforded a tumultuous welcome by thousands lining the route as they drove to the yard. The new vessel is 714 feet long, has nine decks, and will be fitted with radar. Clipper-bowed and single-funnelled, the Caronia will form, with the Mauritania, a second string for the two Queens on the North Atlantic route. The ?3 million ship will become an important dollar earner for Britain.
Picture shows: Viewed from a helicopter hovering over the Clyde, the Caronia sends a wake of wavs across the river as she takes the water during her launching today.
