Framed Print of Members of the Parachute Regiment of which General Sir Richard Gale is Colonel Commandant

Members of the Parachute Regiment of which General Sir Richard Gale is Colonel Commandant, are purchasing luxury caravans by instalments - from the Army to overcome the acute shortage of married quarters. The village has been given the name of Pegasus Village - after the winged horse emblem of the Airborne Forces. By the end of the year the village is expected to be an almost self-contained community of 40 caravans, with water, electricity, a club room, childrens nursery, grocery shop with launderette. Buildings from a disused wartime hospital on the site provides accommodation for washing rooms, toilets, bathrooms, store sheds and for the nursery and club. There are already more than 20 families living in the village. The 1st. En. Parachute Regiment had the idea in the first place and the 3rd. En. has since joined in. The village is near Aldershot, Hants. and the paratroopers paid ?30 down for the caravans and the remainder at ?4 a week - within two years. They think it is like paradise. Pte. John Williams (21) playing with his baby daughter - 1 year old Catherine. His wife Mary sits knitting in the doorway of their luxury caravan. She says You won t find one unhappy wife here. 21st October 1959.
