Resident of South Coast Tower narrowly escapes death as storm destroys residence at Eastbourne
Resident of South Coast Tower narrowly escapes death as storm destroys residence at Eastbourne.
Mr F Turvey, who has been living in the Martello tower, at Eastbourne, Sussex, one of the forts built in 1805 to repel a Napoleonic invasion, narrowly escaped death, when a terrible storm battered the building, splitting it from top to bottom. Hearing a cracking noise at the height of the storm, Mr F Turvey rose to investigate the trouble and a shower of debris fell all around him. He made a dash for the door of the fort and managed to escape just as the tower split in two amid falling masonry.
