The North German Lloyd liner Bremen, which arrived in New York with 1600 passengers only a few hours before, is loaded with fuel oil from a tanker alongside during the early hours of 29 August, preparatory to dash back to Germany without passengers or cargo. Preparations for the trip home, " under sealed orders and under the control of the Reich Navy" were carried out in feverish haste and under close guard.
