Oldest tenant, aged 79, given notice to quit city village.
Tenants in a block of houses in Great New Street, behind Fleet Street, have been given notice to quit by the end of next month, and when they go one of the few remaining old world villages in the City of London will disappear.
Some of the houses, quaintly Dickensian, have been in the same family for over 100 years.
Probably the oldest tenant in the area is Miss Maria Jane Lizzie Kersey, aged 79, proprietress of a small store, which has been in the street since about 1820. Mrs Karsey was born there and has never left the place, she is wondering where she can find a new home.
The reasons for the disappearance of the village is business expansion in the area.
