Watching for the bailiffs from her cottag window at Benwick, Isle of Ely, today is Miss Elizabeth Foster, village school mistress for 45 years. The local council has a county court order for the eviction of Miss Foster and her sister from the cottage, which is wanted for an agricultural labourer and his family. But for four days the villagers have banded together to prevent the bailiffs from putting the order in effect. Elaborate plans to foil them, including " guard duties", " look outs" and the formation of a cordon around the cottage has been evolved at the villagers tactical headquarters " The boot and slipper" and the locals are confident of their ability to withstand a seige. Unofficial statement from officialdom is still " Wait and see".
