Roy Lunn, British designer of the winning Fords said, " We tried to make it a dead heat and we forgot about the starting position rule, The McLaren car officially won by 20 metres (60 ft) because that was the distance which separated it from the No 1 car on the starting grid ". The winner officially average 201.795 kmph for the whole disatance, the first time the 200 km mark had ever been broken.
