The tangled wreckage of Pierre Leveghs Mercedes after the disaster which claimed
The tangled wreckage of Pierre Leveghs Mercedes after the disaster which claimed 84 lives in the early stages of the 24-hour Le Mans race, France. The Mercedes smashed at 120 miles an hour into a British car and exploded like a bomb. Engine and front axle scythed through the packed crowd watching the race. Some were decapitated, others terribly burned by blazing petrol. Besides the 84 dead, 100 people were injured. Levegh was dead when pulled from the wreckage of this car. The race went on.
