Police, armed with truncheons, clashed with strikers at the Barbican building site. It happened after Mytons, the contractors, brought in new workers in a bid to re - open the 5 and a half million pound site in the City.
Strikers threw themselves on vans carrying the workers, hammering on windows and doors and shouting abuse.
Further ugly scenes broke out during a mass meeting of the strikers.
