Peers robes for Coronation made in London. Handwoven velvet and ermine - cost ?200.
The magnificent red-and-white robes of velvet and ermine to be worn by peers and peeresses at the Coronation next May are being made by hand in the West End workrooms of Messrs Wilkinson, the Court tailors. Nearly 20 yards of handwoven velvet are used to make one robe, which when completed may cost as much as ?200. Difference in rank in the case of peers is shown only by the variation of rows of black fur spotting let into the ermine. For peeresses the only distinguishing mark is the length of the train.
Photo shows: making the red velvet and white ermine robes of an Earl, distinguished by three rows of black fur spotting.
