John Nash design for the Royal Pavilion in Brighton - The Great Kitchen was one of the first areas to be completed as part of John Nashs reconstruction of the Pavilion. It was erected in 1816 with the cooking equipment supplied over the following two years by William Stark. The ceiling is supported by four cast iron columns with painted copper palm leaves. Above, the high lantern with its twelve sash windows provides a spacious feel to the Kitchen. George IV was delighted with the design and equipment in the Kitchen, used for the sumptuous banquets he hosted. Guests were often escorted around the Kitchen and surrounding culinary offices as part of the tour of the State Apartments.
